The Café at Mill Street Market

The Café at Mill Street Market will be a welcoming space where fresh, locally sourced food meets community gathering. Designed as an extension of the Market, the café will highlight ingredients from local farms, regional producers, and food entrepreneurs connected to the Mill Street Market Campus.

Our goal is simple: serve delicious food that reflects the seasons, supports local agriculture, and provides a comfortable place for people to gather, work, and connect.

Farm-to-Table Focus

The café menu will be rooted in a farm-to-table philosophy, featuring ingredients sourced from local farms and producers whenever possible. Seasonal availability will guide the menu, creating fresh options that change throughout the year while highlighting the best of what our region grows and produces.

By working closely with farmers and food makers, the café helps strengthen the local food system while giving customers a direct connection to where their food comes from.

What You’ll Find on the Menu

The café will offer simple, fresh meals made with high-quality ingredients. Menu items will include:

  • Fresh sandwiches made with local breads, meats, and produce
  • Grain bowls with vegetables, proteins, and house-made sauces
  • Fresh salads built around regional produce
  • Featured Chef specials highlight seasonal flavors and creative dishes made fresh by a local culinary artist.

These offerings will rotate with the seasons and showcase products available throughout the Market.

Coffee, Tea, and Light Fare

The café will also serve a curated selection of coffee, tea, and light café fare, making it an ideal stop throughout the day.

Guests can expect:

  • Fresh brewed coffee and espresso drinks

  • Specialty teas and seasonal beverages

  • Light breakfast and snack options

  • Baked goods and pastries from local makers

Whether stopping in for a quick coffee, meeting friends for lunch, or working for the afternoon, the café will provide a relaxed and welcoming environment.

Connected to the Campus

The Café is part of the broader Mill Street Market Campus mission, connecting food, education, and entrepreneurship.

Many menu items will feature products developed by local food entrepreneurs working through the campus incubator programs, creating a pathway for small businesses to test products, build their brand, and reach customers.

The café will also collaborate with the campus kitchen and Child Development Center to support healthy meals and culinary learning opportunities.

A Place to Gather

More than just a place to eat, the Café at Mill Street Market is designed to be a gathering place for the community, a spot where people can connect over good food, local ingredients, and shared experiences.

As the campus grows, the café will continue to evolve, offering new seasonal dishes, collaborations with local producers, and opportunities to celebrate the food culture of our region.

Market-Cafe
Featured Chef Program

The Featured Chef program also creates opportunities for local food entrepreneurs and vendors to feature their cuisine in the café. Participating vendors may reserve a day to serve a featured dish or menu item, preparing an agreed-upon number of servings in the Mill Street Market incubator kitchen. Vendors will receive discounted access to the kitchen space and must prepare all items on-site in accordance with kitchen and food safety guidelines.

Any remaining meals at the end of service may be packaged as ready-to-eat items and sold through the Farm Stop market or used by the vendor in other approved ways. This program provides a low-risk opportunity for chefs and food entrepreneurs to test recipes, build their brand, and connect directly with customers.

Our Food Philosophy

The Café is part of the broader Mill Street Market Campus mission — connecting food, education, and entrepreneurship.

Meet the Kitchen & Culinary Program

Behind the café is the Mill Street Market incubator kitchen and culinary program, designed to support emerging food entrepreneurs and small businesses.

This shared kitchen space provides licensed, commercial-grade facilities where entrepreneurs can develop recipes, produce food products, and grow their businesses. The program also offers opportunities for culinary education, mentorship, and hands-on experience in food production and operations.

Through initiatives like the Featured Chef program, entrepreneurs can bring their ideas directly to customers by preparing and serving featured meals in the café. This model allows chefs and food makers to test menus, build brand recognition, and gain real-world experience in a supportive environment.

The café, market, and kitchen work together to create a pathway for food entrepreneurs, from recipe development to product sales and customer connection.

* While construction is underway, we are eager to speak with farmers throughout the state of Michigan, small product producers, and entrepreneurs interested in having their products available in retail and/or our online offerings!
